Choice Based Credit System

Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) is mandated by University Grants Commission (UGC). It allows flexibility in education system, so that students, depending upon their interests and goals can select inter / intra disciplinary and courses beyond their own domain. This is possible when CBCS an internationally acknowledged system is adopted. It offers opportunities and avenues to explore additional avenues of learning beyond the core subjects for holistic development of an individual. It ensures that a student develop both sides of his mind – the calculative as well as cognitive.

How Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) helps a Student?

  • Makes education broad-based and at par with global standards.
  • Allows a student to study what he prefers in his own sequence as per his interests.
  • Credits can be earned by choosing unique combination of subjects like Engineering with Basic Laws, Psychology with Basics of Physiotherapy and English with Techniques of Asian Cuisine and so on.
  • Credits earned at one institution can be transferred to another facilitating student mobility across institutions within the country and institutions that are spread across the world
  • The system will enable employers to assess the performance of students on a scientific scale and improves the job opportunities of the students

Features of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)

Three types of CBCS courses followed:

Core – These are courses that must be studied as a core requirement. About 60% to 70% of the total credits are for the Core subjects.

For example, for ‘B.Tech Robotics Engineering’ students, ‘Object-oriented programming in Python’, ‘Motors and Sensors’ and ‘Science of Living Systems’ are core subjects.

Departmental Elective – A student gets the opportunity to learn a course that may be very specific or supportive to the departmental programme.

Approximately 15%-25% of total credits are departmental electives.

For example, for B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering (Specialization: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning)” students, ‘Supervised Learning’, ‘Unsupervised Learning’ and ‘Big Data Analytics with Hadoop / Spark’ are Departmental Elective subjects.

University General Elective – It covers University wide general elective courses that are open for students to choose from the courses that are offered by other Schools unrelated to the students’ departmental programme under study.

About 15% – 20% of total credits are for University General Elective courses.

For example an engineering student can choose Psychology as his/her General Elective subject.
