World DNA Day Celebration

The School of Agriculture & Allied Sciences celebrated the 6th World DNA Day programme on 24.04.2025. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Ashutosh Sawarkar, Head Agriculture Division, IRDM, Narendrapur, Kolkata. Dr. Sawarkar presented an interesting topic ” DNA TO DINNER PLATE– How Genetics shaped the food we eat” covering the discovery of DNA, the scientists related to the integration of DNA with heredity, DNA extraction techniques, molecular techniques such as TILLING, gene editing, CRISPR/Cas9 technologies and their application in developing climate resilient futuristic crop ideotypes, designing customized varieties according to consumer need, space phyto-habitation, human origin, ancestry to cutting-edge modular genetics. The cultural programme included a social drama on Genetics as a tool to fight social discriminations, DNA based recitation and musicals, vibrating song and dance performances by the BSc Agriculture students. The second session included student scientific presentations and the students displayed magnificent model and power-point presentations on diverse topics covering classical and contemporary genetics. The celebration showcased the extraordinary skill of our students in both co-curricular and extra-curricular components integral part of academic performance of a university. The program was a great success. School of Agriculture & Allied Sciences heartily and humbly thanks all concerned for their support and cooperation.
